Lufthansa is trialing a “light cleaning” concept in economy class on around 20 short-haul flights between March 16–29, 2026, across selected European outstations. The initiative aims to reduce operational costs and optimize aircraft turnaround times.
Under the new concept, cleaning in the economy cabin is performed only when necessary. Cabin crew assess the condition of the cabin and clean specific areas as needed, while lavatories and seat pockets are cleaned upon request. Meanwhile, business class cleaning standards remain unchanged.
The trial excludes flights departing from Frankfurt Airport and Munich Airport, and standard cleaning procedures continue for aircraft parked overnight. Lufthansa is also evaluating operational efficiency by reducing cleaning staff at certain outstations.
Separately, Lufthansa’s CEO highlighted competitive challenges, stating that airlines based outside the European Union—particularly in Asia and the Gulf region—create a competitive disadvantage. He noted that the airline has fallen behind in the Southeast Asian market, arguing that current competition conditions are not entirely fair.
